Kids Corner: Expanded Noun Phrases

Do not upset the Quilfish… it looks like it could beat me up in a fight. Anyway, let’s take a look at Expanded Noun Phrases!

Expanded Noun Phrases are little sentences that teach you an awful lot (a big amount) about how to make sentences in English. They are built like this -> (beginning, adjective 1, adjective 2, verb, noun, ending). If we look at the Quilfish as an example: starter = “I am an”, adjective 1 = “angry”, adjective 2 = “underwater”, verb = “staring”, noun = “Quilfish”, ending = “.”

So, what does an expanded noun phrase teach you?

·         How to be more descriptive (give more detail about things) in English.

·         How to start and end sentences.

·         Adjectives can go before verbs and nouns to create shorter sentences.

·         You can use more than one adjective.

·         Verbs can go before nouns to make shorter sentences.

So, play around with some expanded noun phrases of your own to practice your descriptions in English! It is a great way to improve your creative writing (story telling), and to help you write better essays and exam answers!
