Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the Questions I am Asked Most Often.

Lessons and Sessions

Do you teach or tutor face to face?

No, I only teach online which means you can learn from anywhere in the world with an internet connection. It also means you can stay comfortable at home or in the office, and there are no travel times

How long is a session?

Each session is 1 hour long by standard, but it can be longer if needed. I don’t recommend anything longer than 2 hours, and you should have a 10 minute break to refresh in the middle.

How many lessons can I have a week?

You can have as many lessons as you need a week as long as I have time to teach them! Most people will not need more than 2 lessons a week of 1 hour each.

Do I need to buy any study materials?

You will not need to buy any materials to learn effectively, but I can make recommendations for extras if you would like them.

Qualifications

Are you a native English speaker?

Yes! I was born in England and grew up in England. British English is my native language and my accent is described as “Estuary London”.

Are you a qualified ESL teacher?

Yes, I am a qualified TESOL teacher (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). I qualified with ITTT at Grade A “having performed significantly higher than the required level in all course assignments” in 2013, and have gained extensive experience teaching ever since.

Are you a qualified school teacher?

I am not qualified to teach English in physical schools in Great Britain. I tutor GCSE and A-Level students with a very high success rate, but am not part of the official school system. I have taken my English GCSE and A-Level Exams though (a long time ago!) and achieved 100% in 3 of my exams - I aim to pass that on.

Are you a qualified IELTS teacher?

There is no qualification required to teach IELTS specifically but I have completed official IELTS training with the British Council.

How do your psychology qualifications help you teach?

Why did you study psychology and English teaching?

My history of forensic psychology means that I have worked in psychological and criminalogical fields. That means that I am well educated in how the human brain works, and especially how it learns! This life experience has also surprisingly helped me out in other areas like tutoring GCSE poetry and A-Level literature.

I have been interested in careers that help people since I was a young teenager, and over time these became forensic psychology, and teaching English. I studied psychology and forensics to help people live their lives without hurting others, and I studied English teaching to help people reach their full potential without their English skills holding them back. I moved between the UK and Germany in my 20s and have worked in both English teaching and forensic psychology for many years. I ended my career in forensic psychology in 2020 when I founded Wright English.

Missing / Cancelling Sessions

What happens if I miss a lesson accidentally?

I try to be very flexible because I understand how busy real life is! I reserve the right to ask for payment if lessons are missed with no warning but if it was a genuine mistake I often reschedule without payment.

Do I need to pay if I cancel a lesson?

No. If you tell me before the lesson begins that you need to cancel or rearrange, you will not be asked for payment.

Payment

How much do sessions cost?

Sessions range in cost between £25 and £35 (GBP) per 1 hour. The prices vary depending on the amount of preparation that needs to be done for each session type. See Other English Services for information about editing and copywriting.

How do I pay for sessions?

I bill my clients once a month at the end of the previous month. So if you have 4 sessions in March, I will send you an invoice on the 22nd of February. There are then 7 days to send payment before March.

What happens if I pay late?

If payment is not received before the 7th of the month a late fee can be added. This fee is outlined on the invoice you received for this month. It is also possible that your lessons could stop until payment is received.

What payment methods do you accept?

The simplest payment method is a bank transfer with the details on your invoice. I do accept Paypal and credit or debit cards. Please contact me if you would like to use these methods.

Student Disability

Do you teach autistic students?

Yes, I do. I usually find that my autism helps me connect with autistic clients more effectively, because we think in a similar way.

Do you teach dyslexic students?

Yes, I do. Having experienced my own dyslexia and working my way through schools, universities, and then businesses, I can help others by passing on the skills I learned to overcome what I found difficult.

Can my assistance animal come to sessions?

Absolutely! You can bring your assistance animal, person, plushie, plant, lego… whatever helps you feel calm and happy. Please let me see your animal though!

Teacher Disability

I heard that you (Lana) are disabled. What are your disabilities?

I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome Hypermobility Type, I’m autistic, and I’m dyslexic.

How do your (Lana’s) disabilities affect lessons?

My EDS makes me very tired, causes me a lot of pain, gives me frequent migraines, and causes sleep problems (and lots of other annoying things). Unfortunately, that means I sometimes need to reschedule sessions because of sudden physical problems. I have always been very thankful that my clients are so understanding and help me rearrange when I need to.

My autism and dyslexia caused me problems when I was younger but as an adult, they help me reach other autistic and dyslexic people, and find new and interesting ways to teach. Everyone learns differently and I can use my experience overcoming difficulties to help others.

Safety for Children and Vulnerable Adults

Are you DBS checked?

Yes, I have a current DBS check for working with children and vulnerable adults. Please let me know if you would like to see my certificate.

What child safety measures do you have?

I only use Microsoft Teams for my sessions because of enhanced security measures that platforms like Zoom don’t have. No one can join our session uninvited. I also make sure that all video content we use is child friendly.

Can I attend sessions with my child / vulnerable friend?

Yes! Please join us. I only ask that people who come to sessions to support others try not to join the conversation unless necessary.

Copywriting and Copyediting

Can you proofread or edit my ______ ?

Yes, I almost certainly can. The only reason I would turn down a proofreading or editing task is if I cannot guarantee you a quick and high-quality service, or if I morally object to the material (this has never happened). Please contact me and tell me what you can about your task, and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

What copyediting experience do you have?

I have been providing a high-quality, no-fuss proofreading and copy editing service since 2020 with excellent client feedback.

I have extensive experience proofreading and editing the following: dissertations and other academic papers in a range of styles including Chicago and APA, graphic novels, websites, reports and coursework for industry qualifications, textbooks, fiction and non-fiction novels, applications and cover letters, and more.

What copywriting experience do you have?

I have been copywriting for clients since 2020, and I love it. I have experience writing the following copy: letters of recommendation, over 100 technical but customer-friendly support articles, comedy social media posts, poetry and deep thought articles, cold outreach advertising, statistical newsletters, internal and external policy documents, and more.
