Kids Corner: How to enjoy reading old English books
You are sitting in your English lesson and you hear the words “This book was written in…” and you pray it’s in the last 20 years right? Can this book please be in COLOUR?! Well don’t worry because there is a way to make the ‘crusty’ old English enjoyable to read.
Step 1: Try and choose a book that would be interesting to you if it was written today. If you aren’t interested in how rich people with nothing to do spend their lives today, you might not be interested in 100 year old books about that either. If you like fantasy try Lord of the Rings, if you like science fiction try H. G. Well and the War of the worlds!
Step 2: Be OK with not understanding every word. Even I don’t understand every word. Most of the time you will be able to understand it from the other words around it (context). If you don’t, just carry on reading. It is probably not that important. If you really need to know what it means to understand the story, then you can look it up.
Step 3: Read it slowly. Take your time and enjoy the atmosphere the writer creates. Think about what each paragraph means for the story and the people involved. It can feel like solving a fun mystery or puzzle thinking about what might be coming next.
This is a great way to explore more literature, and if you are an advanced English speaker you will find that older literature will really increase your vocabulary!
