Why Should I Learn English Grammar?

This is a question I get asked a lot. People think about learning a language and they remember sitting in a school room saying “I am going to the cinema” 100 times,  and writing “I am, you are, he/she/it is, we are, they are”, until they want to jump out the window. I understand. Some of our learning experiences were not great! Let’s explore why grammar is important, and how it helps you.

Good grammar is not about impressing the queen of England. She might be impressed with your hard work, but she is a busy lady so let’s not bother her. Having good grammar is about making you feel more confident speaking English, more detailed in your information, and giving a good impression to others. Good grammar also helps you understand fine details in what other people say to you.

Grammar in English holds a lot of information that is important for fully understanding what other people say. The difference between “I worked at Samsung for 3 months”, and “I have worked at Samsung for 3 months” is pretty big! In one, at some point in the past someone had a job with Samsung. In the other, this person is a new employee of Samsung and works there now. It is a very small change in grammar, but a big difference in meaning.

Having a good understanding of English grammar helps you feel more confident speaking and writing in English. When you are confident in your grammar, you are confident that you are giving other people the right meaning and the right impression. When you can stop worrying about saying what you want to say, you can start thinking about how you want to say it. You can start to use your words and your grammar to influence people, make jokes, and show your individual personality. You have moved away from saying what you want, and on to how you want it.

People generally feel more comfortable communicating with someone with good grammar. When we use poor grammar, the message is a little confusing sometimes. People who talk to you and read your messages, are not always sure what you mean, and what you want. With good grammar, your message is clearer, and the people you communicate with are more relaxed. They know what to expect!

So do you need to master English grammar before you can say all the days of the week? Absolutely not! Your first goal is to get the building blocks to communicate. Is English grammar unimportant? I would say no. Good grammar opens doors for you, and it makes sense to walk through them.
