Vocabulary Showcase - Synonyms for ‘Sad’
Sometimes you just feel sad, and that’s normal. It’s important to explain how you feel. Let’s look at different words with the same meaning (synonyms) as sad.
Synonyms for ‘Sad’
These synonyms for sad are organised with the weakest or calmest words at the top, and the strongest or more dramatic words at the bottom:
out of sorts (informal, general) - “Simon the pug is out of sorts because he can’t have any more chicken nuggets.”
down (informal, modern) - “I’m OK. I’m just feeling a little down because Netflix cancelled my favourite TV show.”
unhappy (general) - “Desmond is unhappy because everyone is talking about politics and he doesn’t understand.”
sorrowful (formal, old-fashioned) - “That is the sorrowful face of a cat who wants to be less cute.”
melancholy (formal, old-fashioned) - “Gilbert the bird can’t read, and that makes him melancholy.”
depressed (general) - “Alice the penguin is depressed because she only gets to eat fish.”
miserable (general) - “I was miserable this morning, but writing this has made me happy again.”
