Kids Corner: No child left behind reading and writing

readingandwriting.jpg

Every kid should be given the help they need to read and write in English when they need the English language. I truly believe that, but sadly this is not always what happens. There are many reasons some kids are not given the help they need to read and write in English:

·         People not understanding that the child is dyslexic

·         Bad teachers who don’t like the child or are lazy

·         Some children have attention difficulties and find it hard to concentrate

·         Sometimes children are not helped because of racism / sexism / and many other “isms”!

All of the above are terrible reasons for a child not to be offered help. My absolute favourite students are the kids who need help reading and writing. Why? Because I get to see how happy they are when they start to read all by themselves. Nothing beats the feeling of seeing a child learn to be proud of their reading and writing!

So, who can I help learn to read? Let’s look at some people I have helped already:

·         Kiddo 1 missed lots of school because of the pandemic. We played and read books together until he was ready to re-join school at the same level as everyone else!

·         Kiddo 2 was almost 8 years old with undiagnosed dyslexia. He could not read or write and was not helped at school. We work together every week and play reading games together. Kiddo 2 now has a dyslexia assessment booked, is going to a new school, and can read at a level 2 years higher than when we started!

·         Kiddo 3 has excellent English but struggles to write because he has ADHD. We have found special ways that work just for Kiddo 3 to help him concentrate, have fun, and not miss out on his wonderful intelligent and creative ideas! We are now preparing for an exam for gifted (very intelligent) kids!

I love helping people learn to read and write because it opens a door to the whole world for them. I also have a great time with kids because they have the most creative brains of anyone. Basically teaching kids is fun for me too.
