Kids Corner: KS2 The Essay Burger

The essay burger.jpg

Organising an essay huh? Complicated isn’t it?! Even if you really know what you are talking about, somehow the information just seems more important than the structure right? I see what you mean but now it is time to become an essay master. It is time to be an essay burger slinger in the fast-food English lesson of life!

This is a quick and easy way for beginners to start organising their essays. Picture a burger, but don’t go and eat it until you’ve finished reading this. We have two bits of bread, and a load of different fillings in the middle. This is how you begin to organise your essay burger:

  • Top bread – Introduction -> Give an overview of what you are talking about, and let the reader know what kind of things you are going to put in the filling.

  • Filling 1 – Cheese -> This is the first main point you are talking about in your essay. Mini introduction to this area, talk about everything you need to say about cheese, then mini summary of cheese.

  • Filling 2 – Meat -> Your second essay point. Mini meat introduction, main meat information, mini summary of meat.

  • Filling 3 Lettuce -> Your third essay point. Mini lettuce introduction, main lettuce information, mini summary of lettuce.

  • Bottom bread – Summary and conclusion-> A quick summary of the main points of your cheese, meat, and lettuce. Write about what all of these ingredients mean for your whole burger (Good burger? Bad burger? Important burger for the future of the human race?).

The bread holds your whole essay burger together so don’t forget that. You can have as many fillings as you need in your essay burger, but make sure they are important for the burger. Just because you know an awful lot about rocks doesn’t mean in belongs in your burger.

Take time to plan your burger, and you will end up with a truly delicious essay.
