Wednesday Wildcard: How to get back into learning English

unicycle in a storm.jpg

English is a complicated language because of the many languages it is made of. That means that learning English can feel a bit like riding a unicycle in a storm. It can be easy to give up learning. I have made a list of reasons to get back on that unicycle and keep going.

Reasons people stop learning, and reasons to try again:

• “I’m not making any progress” – It’s not you, it’s the teacher or the way you are learning. Everyone has a different learning style, and you will make progress. Try something new.

• “I’m not smart enough” – Baby’s learn it. You ARE smart enough. It is one of the most difficult tasks in the world. You can do it.

• “I can’t afford it” – There are many free ways to continue learning. Join conversation groups and practice and learn by using your English. Use free apps to make sure you don’t forget what you’ve learned.

• “It’s too stressful” – It should never be stressful. You need a new teacher. You should always feel relaxed and enjoy your lessons.

• “I don’t have time!” – Focus on your priorities. Make sure you have time for yourself, and time to focus on your future goals. Can you make time? If not, take a 6-month break and come back. Languages are brilliant life skills.

• “I’m too shy” – If you find it difficult to talk in English with other people, you should try private lessons with a teacher. They are more affordable than you think, and you can build your confidence with a teacher you trust.

• “I don’t want to do it anymore” – This is the only real reason to stop forever. If you don’t need to learn English and you don’t enjoy it, stop!

So why did you stop? Is there another way for you to continue?
