Wednesday Wildcard: The best way to prepare for your IELTS exams

Taking any exam can be a little stressful. We all like to feel prepared, but what is the best way to do that? You want to do the best that you can, so here are some tips to help you prepare:

·         Don’t try to learn lots of new things close to the exams – you don’t have time!

·         Practice speaking English socially – this will help you feel more confident and calm in your speaking test.

·         Learn the test structure! You will increase your IELTS score the most by learning when to answer in full sentences, when to look for answers in a text, and how to use your time best.

·         Learn how much time you have for each task – Use your time wisely and focus on tasks that score the highest.

·         Take some IELTS preparation lessons – You can learn alone or with friends, but lessons with a teacher can really help! IELTS Teachers can guide you to improve in your weaker areas, teach you the structure, practice with you, and give you helpful tips.

·         Take practice exams – If you know a native speaker ask them to mark it for you. If you know a native-speaking English teacher, even better!

·         Watch lots of TV with no subtitles! – If you want to take the IELTS exam to live in Canada, listen to Canadian radio, watch Canadian TV, and read Canadian books. The more you “live” in the culture, the more confident and skilful you will be on exam day!

·         Join online IELTS prep social groups – Swap tips, materials, experiences and knowledge with others and everyone gets better. You can practice your speaking together and support one another.

What is the most important tip of all? Learn how the test works, how long each section is, and what you will be asked in each section of the speaking test. This gives you the best chance of a great score. Good luck, and let me know what helps you most with your IELTS prep!
