Vocabulary Showcase: Describing Weather

Do you know how to describe the weather? The old joke is that the English only talk about the weather. This is at least 70% true, and it is a useful but lazy place to start a conversation with a stranger. Learn these English weather words and expand your vocabulary!

Sleet – Frozen rain

Drizzle – very light rain that has almost stopped

Cloudy – The sky is covered in clouds

Stormy – lightning rain and wind

Thunder – Loud booming sounds that come with lightning

Lightning – Electrical bolts that come during a storm

Icey – Puddles and lakes are frozen

Misty / Foggy - Cloud very close to the ground that makes it hard to see

Hail – Heavy large ice balls that fall from the sky

Humid – High water level in the air
