Vocabulary Showcase: Synonyms for ‘Shiny’

All those beautiful shiny decorations on the tree… well, they are only on the tree if you don’t have a cat. let’s look at some synonyms for the adjective (describing word) shiny.

A cute cat is looking at the lights on a Christmas tree at the same time as sniffing a branch. There are 2 thought bubbles saying "Shiny" and "Smells like Christmas". A title box reads the same as the article text.

Synonyms for “Shiny”

  • Glittering (adj.) - “The Christmas tree lights are glittering”

  • Twinkling (adj.) - “I love looking at the twinkling stars in the sky”

  • Shimmery (adj.) - “When it snows at night, it looks shimmery under street lights”

  • Glistening (adj.) - “The ice is glistening under the bright winter sun”

  • Gleaming* (adj.) - “The football trophy is gleaming as the team hold it up high”

  • Glinting* (adj.) - “I found my lost car keys because they glinted in the dark”

Summing Up

All of these adjectives are still used today, but gleaming and glinting sound slightly old-fashioned. That makes them great words for poetry and stories, though.
