Vocabulary Showcase: Synonyms for ‘Celebrate’
It’s Vocabulary Showcase and Ginger might have lost a friend there, but at least he has some great photos of Gavin to laugh at for years to come. This week we are looking at synonyms (other words with the same meaning) for celebrate.
Synonyms for Celebrate
enjoy myself/yourself (general, modern) - “It’s time to join the crowd and enjoy yourself!”
drink a toast to (general and formal, modern) - Let’s raise a toast to Julie for her first Christmas in her new home!” (everyone raises their drink and says “To Julie”.
party (informal, modern) - “It’s my birthday and it’s time to party!”
have a ball (general, old-fashioned) - “Alice and Sue are at the Christmas party. They are having a ball.”
paint the town red (informal, old-fashioned) - “That was my last shift at work and I’m ready to paint the town red.”
revel (formal, old-fashioned) - “Simon is reveling in the party atmosphere at the New Year’s event.”
carouse (formal, old-fashioned) - “Everyone in the Village is carousing in the pub this Christmas.”
whoop it up (informal, very old-fashioned) - “Let’s all go to the seaside and whoop it up at the amusements*!”
*Amusements is another word for arcade machines and other common seaside attractions along peers.
