Kids Corner: Google Maps Reading Adventures

googlemapsadventure.jpg

Stuck for something fun to do with your kids to help them read during lockdown? What about a google maps reading adventure? You can travel the world safely from home and read shop signs, and street names as you go.

If you search for a location on google maps, there is a little yellow man you can pick up and drag onto the map. When you pick him up, he will highlight areas of the map where you can place him. You can go on a walk around your town reading shop signs and street names as you go, you can go to the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, England, Scotland…

Did you know you can go inside ancient Egyptian tombs at the Valley of the Kings in Egypt? You can go inside the first-class cabin of commercial plane at Heathrow airport near London. You can stand underneath the skeleton of a giant dinosaur at the Natural History Museum in London.

You could use Google maps as a reward! Your child can pick any place in the world, you can teach them words related to it, and you can reward them with a virtual exploration of that location. Does you child play Grand Theft Auto? Maybe they would enjoy going to the real Los Santos.

I like to explore the temples and tombs of Egypt. Where do you go?
