Gateway to Grammar: Should I take grammar lessons? Normally no..

Many people ask for grammar classes, or ask me if they need grammar classes. Around 95% of the time the answer is no, that is not normally a very good idea.

When you learn a language you do not want to learn only one part of it (just reading, just writing, just verbs, or just nouns for example) and there are very few situations where learning only grammar is going to be a good idea for you.

Learning grammar only, and not using it in conversation, or improving your vocabulary with it, will leave you with a lot of technical knowledge that you can’t really use. It is not good for you to have a lot of English Lego instructions in your head, but you never buy any bricks to build with.

The only situation I would ever recommend grammar lessons is this: You have learned some English already, you have a good vocabulary, good pronunciation, and you are comfortable using English, but you know your Grammar is way behind your general skill level. I would also only recommend taking grammar lessons one to one with a teacher. The reason for this is, if you speak some English already, you will know some grammar naturally. In a group everyone will have different skill levels, and you will waste your time learning grammar you already know. One to one, your teacher can focus on what YOU need to learn, and help you boost your skills more quickly.

Learning English grammar is not the same as learning English in General. It is only one part of a fantastic language pizza. You have your base, but you need your toppings, sauce, and an oven!
