Vocabulary Showcase: Synonyms for “party”

It’s been a little while since we could have any parties. Maybe I have been partying with pineapples for 2020 and 2021. Please don’t judge me.

Let’s have a look at those synonyms for “party” in sentences:

·         Get-together (informal) - “Marc is having a get-together at his place tonight. Do you want to come?”

·         Shindig (very informal) - “I’m having a shindig at the community hall for my 40th”

·         Soirée (very formal and posh!) - “Elizabeth will be at the soirée tonight. Perhaps you can speak with her there”

·         Bash (informal) – “There’s a Christmas bash on at the rugby club this weekend!”

·         Blow-out (big party, informal) – “There’s a big blow-out on in the city centre to celebrate the new year!”

·         Knees-up (drinking party, informal) – “Are you coming to mine after work for a knees-up?”

I pray to the weather gods that I can have my barbeque shindig this weekend! I can’t afford a blow-out, hopefully cola is good enough for the guests! What do you call parties where you are from?
