Vocabulary Showcase: “lookalike”
Please never stand this close to me. I will cry. This week we are looking at the word “lookalike” (from “look a like”) which is used to say that someone looks almost exactly like you, like a twin! I have some more synonyms and we can look at them together in use in sentences:
• Double – “The lady on the beer advert is my double.”
• Twin – “I swear that man at the train station today was your twin.”
• Mirror image – “I met my stepsister (you share a mum or a dad) for the first today. She was my mirror image.”
• Clone – “Your little brother is your clone!”
• Duplicate – “You look so much like your Granddad did at your age, you are a duplicate Arnold!”
• Doppelgänger (German but we use it in English too) – “I think I have a Doppelgänger who works at the coffee shop!”
• Dead ringer – “You are a dead ringer for Lady Gaga! You could be celebrity impersonator!”
I am not a dead ringer for anyone famous or exciting. I do look a lot like my Nanny (Grandma). Someone once said I looked like my Nanny, but when the printer ink ran out (she had dark hair and bright blue eyes, I have silver eyes and blonde hair). I will take that as a compliment.
Do you have a clone out there? Are you a dead ringer for anyone famous? Let me know in the comments!
