Vocabulary Showcase: Synonyms for “culture”

Yesterday I heard a piece of music I had not heard for a very long time. It’s South American music from around Peru and Chile. I’m telling you the happy, positive, colourful culture of Peru and Chile comes out in their music, and it really puts English party music to shame!

Let’s have a look at some other words for culture, in use:

• Civilisation – The Incan civilisation was an ancient South American empire.

• Society – Peruvian society is generally Catholic and celebrates Christmas in December.

• Way of life – The Peruvian way of life is a lot more relaxed than England’s, time keeping is a suggestion not a rule!

• Lifestyle – A normal Peruvian lifestyle includes a lot of home remedies for illnesses.

• Customs – It is a Peruvian custom to drink Inca Cola with everything!

• Traditions – Peruvian people wear traditional clothing that is bursting with colour and very detailed designs.

• Ways – Peruvian ways are very polite. People make sure to shake hands and introduce themselves even to Taxi drivers.

Great, now I want to go to South America. I will just add that to the list with Canada, Bulgaria, Iceland, and Mexico.

What cultural traditions are there where you live?
