Gateway to Grammar: Verb Families p4: ‘un’

I must start by saying sorry for Begun, she hasn’t had her bath for today yet. This week we are continuing to look at past tense verb families. This week is the ‘un’ family.

The easiest way to learn the different forms of past tense for English verbs is to learn the inifitive form (begin), the past simple form (began), and the past participle (or 3rd) form (begun), all together in that order. This way the verbs form families.

This is the un verb family:

• Begin (infinitive), Began (past simple), begun (past participle/3rd form)

• Drink, drank, drunk

• Ring, rang, rung

• Sing, sang, sung

With these three forms you can conjugate these verbs into any of the many English tenses. Learn them as a group as they all follow the same rules, and you will be a past tense verb expert in no time.

Go and have a bath…
