Gateway to Grammar: Common English Interjections

interjections.jpg

Not all English is spoken how our dear Queen would recommend. In fact, a lot of every day English is contractions and slang. Most of all we use a lot of “Interjections”, noises or words used to show surprise, interest, or emotion about what your conversation partner is saying. Let’s have a look at some of the most common:

Surprise:

• Wow!

• Gosh!

• Crikey!

• Blimey! (very mildly offensive to some people)

• Oh!

• Jesus! (could be offensive)

• Bloody hell! (could be offensive)

An accident or pain:

• Ouch!

• Ow!

• *hissing sound*

Realisation:

• Oh!

• Of course!

• Aha!

Happiness or agreement:

• Great!

• Cool!

• Awesome!

• Hooray!

Relief:

• *loud sighing sound*

• Phew!
