Gateway to Grammar: Prepositions of Place and Movement 2 - Above, Underneath, Over and Under.
Welcome to the second part of Prepositions of Place and Movement, and all the cat pictures that come with it. It’s my mission to include cat pictures whenever possible in my lessons. We will be adding 2 more prepositions of place and 2 more prepositions of movement this week.
When to Use Above, Underneath, Over, and Under.
It can be confusing to know which prepositions are used when the cat is moving (prepositions of movement), and which are for not moving (prepositions of place). Let’s take a look:
Above (place) - Fuzz Cannon the cat is sitting above the blanket. She is not moving. She is on the bed, but above the above the blanket. This describes where she is. You can also say she is above the floor.
Underneath (place)* - Gravy Paws is lying still underneath the blanket. This describes where he is.
Over (movement) - Gilbert the Spring is running over the stool (chair with no back) and he is moving. This describes where he is traveling.
Under (movement)* - Wallace is running under the stool. This describes where he is traveling.
Please note: * ‘underneath’ and ‘under’ are often used for movement and place.
Summing Up
If you are following the series, we now have these prepositions of place: in, on, above, and underneath, and these prepositions of movement: into, onto, over, and under. You can use ‘under’ and ‘underneath’ for place or movement. You can also make life simple and only remember ‘under’ for both situations, it’s up to you!
