Business Builder: Business Etiquette in England

englishetiquette.jpg

Every country and culture has it’s own Business Etiquette (good manners). At the moment we all have to keep our distance, and behave in unusual ways. Let’s look at what is normal Business Etiquette in England so you can network well with English colleagues after the pandemic.

Starting a new job

·         Do introduce yourself to your new colleagues when you meet them, and they are available to talk.

·         Do not interrupt people who are busy working to introduce yourself. It is expected that you will introduce yourself when your colleagues are between tasks.

·         Do not bring gifts on your first day. In some cultures this is a great idea, but in Britain is can be seen as trying to “buy” your colleagues.

Physical distance

·         To maintain physical distance in the UK use the “arm length” rule. Put your hand out in front of you, and point your fingers straight upward. The distance from your hand to your shoulder is as close as you should stand to your colleagues. Personal space is important in England.

Social activities

·         You will be invited to social activities by your colleagues outside of work. You will also most likely be invited to social activities organised by your company. I recommend attending at least half of the non-official social activities organised by your colleagues to show that you are interested in them as people. I would recommend attending as many organised by your business as possible to maintain a good reputation.

Just some simple rules can really help you blend into (be part of) a new working culture. Keep your physical distance, and show interest in attending events, and you will do well.
