Wednesday Wildcard: British New Year Traditions
New Year is coming! Have you ever wondered how the British celebrate the change of the year? Let’s have a look!
1. Count down: Like many other countries it is traditional to count down the last 10 seconds toward midnight to celebrate the change of year.
2. Kissing: It is good luck to kiss someone as the clock strikes midnight! Many people believe it is especially good luck for a relationship!
3. Singing “Auld Lang Syne”: This is a Scottish song about a long standing friendship, and remembering all the things and people that have passed while they are friends. The idea is that as you look forward, you catch up with old friends and look back a little too!
4. Drinking champagne: Most of us just use sparkling wine because champagne is so expensive, but it is common to raise a toast and drink champagne to celebrate the changing of the year.
What are your New Years traditions? Does your country do something different? Do you have a special family tradition? Let me know in the comments!
