Vocabulary Showcase: Synonyms for “fly”

Unfortunately, I can’t fly. Maybe Father Christmas (Santa) will give me wings for Christmas. Anyway, let’s have a look at some synonyms for “fly” in use in sentences:

·         Soar – As the reindeer soar through the sky, they sometimes drop presents

·         Swoop – Robins swoop down to pick up worms in the winter

·         Glide – Father Christmas’ sleigh glides across the sky

·         Flutter – Reindeer don’t flutter (flap wings flying) they soar

·         Take wing – Father Christmas takes wing to deliver presents every year

·         Float – Santa’s sleigh floats above houses, that’s why it leaves no tracks in the snow

·         Jet – Maybe a modern sleigh will be powered with fuel and jet through the sky

·         Wheel – Sometimes Rudolf likes to wheel around in loops when he guides the sleigh

Now you can talk all about how things (and reindeer) fly. I think I would be a swooper, swooping like a bird. What about you?
