Vocabulary Showcase: Synonyms for “Quiet”

Quiet is another one of those words we use every day, but we never think of using other words with the same meaning (synonyms). Let’s have a look at similar words, and what their exact meanings are:

Quiet (low volume):

• Hushed: Louis and Clare were having a hushed conversation

• Muted (non-computer): The children spoke in a muted whisper

• Faint: You can hear seagulls calling faintly in the sky far away

• Soft: The bees buzzed softly in their hive

• Low: She sang to herself in low tones as she walked home

• Muffled: I can hear my sister’s muffled talking through the bedroom door

Quiet (calm and not busy):

• Still: The school was so still in the evening after all the children had gone home

No sounds:

• Soundless: Owls fly soundlessly through the night sky

• Silent: The spider moved silently across the wall
