Vocabulary Showcase: Synonyms for “Because”

Don’t worry, Sandra has her reasons for being in a washing machine and I’m sure she will be fine. This week we are looking at some synonyms (different words meaning the same) for ‘because’, because sometimes we need to explain why we do things.

Synonyms for Because

  • since - “I climbed in the washing machine since I could see chocolates inside at the back.”

  • as - “I climbed in the washing machine as I had to get my lunch out of there.”

  • due to - “I climbed in the washing machine due to my need to be in small spaces.”

  • on account of - “I climbed in the washing machine on account of how dirty the floor is in here. I wanted to stay clean”

  • as a result of - “I climbed in the washing machine as a result of too much alcohol and enthusiasm.”

  • thanks to - “I didn’t climb in the washing machine, I’m in here thanks to someone pushing me very hard.”

  • on the strength of - “I climbed in the washing machine on the strength of your recommendation to do new things and see new places.”

  • by virtue of - “I climbed in the washing machine by virtue of my strong wish to avoid my ex-boyfriend.”

Summing Up

There is nothing wrong with the word ‘because’, but sometimes it’s nice to change things a little. It’s especially useful to know synonyms for creative writing, or when you want to make your writing more interesting to read.
