Kids Corner: Why Learning English Through Play is So Important

This week we are talking about learning English and the psychology of learning languages - exciting!

How and Why do Kids Learn Their First Language?

Children work very hard to learn and speak their first language. Kids need to learn your language to communicate what they need to you. From sad real-life situations, we know that if a parent does not try to talk to their children, children do not learn to speak. So this means kids learn their first language because:

  • They need to communicate with you

  • They have no other way to communicate

These two reasons are very strong motivations to help kids keep trying and learning every day.

How Does Learning English Through Play Help Kids?

When your child tries to learn a second language (like English) they don’t need it to communicate with you, and they have their first language to tell you what they need. This takes away those strong motivations to learn, and can stop children trying. This is why kids need fun, play, and games!

Kids are designed to learn through play, and they love playing. Play is:

  • Fun!

  • A good way to get positive time with their parent

  • Rewarding.

These are the new motivators to help kids learn a second language. Time with a parent is very valuable, fun takes the boredom and pain away from traditional language lessons, and rewards keep kids wanting to come back and learn more.

As children go through school their education becomes less and less enjoyable, and can start to feel stressful. Stress makes it very difficult for the human brain to learn new things, so anything we can do as parents and teachers to help keep it fun, is helping kids learn.
