Gateway to Grammar: Which part of speech?

As a native speaker of English I never learned the parts of speech as a child. I learned them when I became a teacher. Knowing the words for the different parts of speech can really help you communicate with your teacher. You can say, “I have problems choosing the right article”, or “I want to learn more advanced adverbs”. It is not essential, and not everyone learns well this way, but it might be helpful for you. It can help you search for learning materials online too! So here is a quick recap on what the parts of speech are called.

  • Noun – a thing!

  • Adjective - a word describing a noun (a thing)

  • Verb – an action/activity Adverb – a word describing an verb (an action or activity)

  • Pronoun – He / she / it / they Punctuation – ‘”?!,.

  • Article = a, the, an

If that helps, great! If not, don't worry about it. You can learn like a native speaker without all the names and terms.
