Gateway to Grammar: Prepositions of Place 3 - Inside, Outside, Through, and Around

Welcome to part 3 of the Gateway to Grammar series on Prepositions for Place (staying still - where is it?) and Movement (moving around - where is it going?). Also, I would like to point out that I started this series with no intention of only using cats, but now I feel like it all has to be cats… and it’s getting difficult!

When do I use ‘Inside’, ‘Outside’, ‘Through’, and ‘Around?

  • Inside (preposition of place - where is it?) - Clive is inside the cat tunnel.

  • Outside (preposition of place - where is it?) - Stripey Legs is outside the window.

  • Through (preposition of movement - where is it going?) - Snowy walked through the tunnel.

  • Around (preposition of movement - where is it going) - Cookietoes is walking around the tunnel.

Summing Up

Like the other prepositions we learned in groups, there are 2 pairs in this week’s prepositions. If it’s still and it’s in the middle of something it’s ‘inside’. If it’s moving and going into the middle of something and out of the middle of something, it’s going ‘through’. Still and not in the middle of something is ‘outside’, and moving along outside of something is ‘around’.
