You’ve made it! You stand in front of 200 students who want to learn all about your favourite subject. It sounds perfect. You know everything you need to about you field, but how do you motivate, excite, and inspire these young people in English?

As an educator who speaks English as their second language, you may be realising that having an extremely good understanding of English is essential in your teaching.

·         Varying your sentence structure, tone, and words to maintain student interest.

·         Knowledge of many different words that mean the same thing (synonyms) to help explain new concepts.

·         Extremely good ability to describe new concepts.

·         The ability to judge ‘tone’ in text to help students write pieces for the correct audience.

·         High level of grammatical understanding to help your students use academic paper formatting such as APA.

·         The ability to use humour in your lectures to keep students engaged and motived.

This is a long list, and there are many things I could add to it. Your excellent knowledge of your field is already there, but the skills needed to be an excellent educator in a second language are like a second job.
